Skin biopsy

Kits can be ordered by using one of three convenient methods:

Kits are provided to you at no charge and are shipped via overnight service. We are happy to schedule kit shipments well in advance of the biopsy date or as little as two days before the procedure. Each kit contains a requisition form to order testing.

KITS PURPOSE AND TESTS

The kit provides for proper collection, fixation, identification and transport of nerve biopsies for the following:

  • Routine histology (RHP), paraffin embedded
  • Immunohistochemistry (IHC)
  • Semithin sections and teased myelinated nerve fibers
  • RNA for quantitative PCR (qPCR) (Optional, for research only)

KIT COMPONENTS (use before expiration date):

Do not discard any of the following. Use for return shipment:

Skin biopsy

1. Transport bag containing:

  • 1 wood support for EM specimen
  • 1 vial box containing:

    a. vial 1 (blue cap) containing RNALater solution for optional qPCR

    b. vial 2 (red cap) containing Michel's solution for IHC

    c. vial 3 (white cap) containing 10% neutral buffered formalin for RHP

    d. vial 4 (yellow cap) containing 3% glutaraldehyde in Sorensen's for semithin sections and teased nerve fibers

2. 2 coolant packs (store in a freezer no colder than -20° C)

3. Styrofoam insulating container

4. Shipping box

5. Pre labeled, pre paid FedEx or UPS return pouch

Additional kit components:

Skin biopsy

1. Sterile, single use biopsy accessory pack containing:

  • 1 plastic splint on which to secure nerve biopsy, with cutting guides
  • 1 pair of blue plastic forceps for handling of nerve segment for qPCR research
  • 1 pair of metal paddle-head forceps for handling of other nerve segments
  • 2 pads of 2" x 2" gauze

2. Ziplock plastic bag containing:

  • User manual
  • Diagrammatic quick reference card for biopsy size and handling
  • 1 pair of metal paddle-head forceps for handling of other nerve segments
  • Requisition form
