Arthur P. Hays, M.D., Managing Director, Director of Nerve Pathology and Research Director
Dr. Arthur P. Hays attended Dartmouth Medical School for two years during the basic part of his education and finished at the University of Colorado where he received his M.D. degree. He spent one year in a pathology internship/residency at the Colorado General Hospital followed by 3 years of biochemical research as a staff associate at the National Institute of Mental Health. He completed the neuropathology resident training program at Presbyterian Hospital in New York City before joining the faculty of Columbia University in the Division of Neuropathology, Department of Pathology, in 1975. At this time, he became Director of the Laboratory of Neuromuscular Pathology to provide clinical and research studies of primary muscle diseases. Later the laboratory expanded diagnostic services to include nerve biopsies in 1980 and epidermal nerve fiber analysis in 2001. He became a Professor of Clinical Pathology and Cell Biology at Columbia University. He has published over 160 peer-reviewed papers and many book chapters.
William N. Harrington, M.D., Medical Laboratory Director
Dr. Harrington received his BA from Columbia College, his MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, was a resident in Pathology at Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, and was a fellow in Neuropathology at NYU. He has previously been a neuropathologist at Yale University School of Medicine, and a surgical pathologist/neuropathologist at Long Island Jewish Hospital and Saint Vincents Hospital in NYC. He is the author of several peer reviewed papers. Dr. Harrington holds a Certificate of Qualification from the New York State Department of Health and is certified from the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology and Neuropathology. Dr. Harrington is presently on the teaching staff at New York Medical College.
Steven S. Chin, M.D., PhD, Director of Neuropathology and Muscle Pathology
Dr. Chin is the Director of Neuropathology & Muscle Pathology at Therapath. Dr. Chin received his MD and PhD degrees from New York University School of Medicine as part of the National Institute Health supported Medical Scientist Training Program. He did his residency in combined Anatomic Pathology and Neuropathology at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Chin is certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology and Neuropathology. After his training he stayed as a faculty member at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center for 9 years. He then moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, to assume the positions of Director of Neuropathology at the University of Utah and Medical Director of Neuropathology at ARUP Laboratories, where he was the only primary provider of Neuropathology services in the Intermountain West region. Dr. Chin has extensive experience in all aspects of diagnostic Neuropathology, including Neuromuscular disorders, Neurodegenerative diseases, and Neuro-oncology. He has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters on various topics in neuroscience and neuropathology.
Marinos C. Dalakas, M.D., Consultant in Neurology, Muscle and Nerve Pathology and Immunopathology
Dr. Dalakas is board certified in Neurology by the American Board of Neurology. He became the chief of the Neuromuscular Diseases Section, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, NIH, Bethesda MD., in 1987 and served in that capacity for 20 years. In 1997 he was elected Professor and Chairman of Neurology at the University of Athens Medical School and in 2007 was appointed Professor of Neurology at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. In 2008 he was appointed Chair, Clinical Neurosciences, Neuromuscular Diseases at Imperial College, London, UK. Since 2006 he is the Chief of Neuroimmunology Unit in the Department of Pathophysiology at the University of Athens Medical School. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and a member of the American Neurological Association, European Neurological Society, World Muscle Society, the French Neurological Society and the Greek Neurological Association. He is an author or co-author of more than 520 scientific papers or chapters in peer-review Journals. He has edited 11 books and monographs and serves on the editorial board of several journals. He has received several awards including the NIH Director's Award, the U.S. Public Health Service Special Recognition Award, the Duchenne-Erb-Prize by the Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Bekämpfung der Muskelkrankheiten e. V. (DGM), Germany, the Ramsay Medal by the Ramsay Society of London, the Onassis Foundation Visiting Scholarship Award, and the Gaetano Conti Prize for Clinical research.
Codrin E. Iacob, M.D., Senior Neuropathologist
Dr. Iacob is the Senior Pathologist, specializing in Nerve Fiber Density testing at Therapath. Dr. Iacob holds a Certificate of Qualification from the New York State Department of Health in 16 different disciplines. He is certified from the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Neuropathology. He is currently appointed to his role at Therapath, as well as Clinical Assistant Professor of Pathology at New York Medical College, Valhalla, NY. Dr. Iacob had a New York University Fellowship in Neuropathology and currently acts as the Director of Clinical Laboratory as well as the Associate Pathologist at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, New York, New York.
Charles Y. Shao, M.D., Ph.D., Neuropathologist
Dr. Shao is one of the lead Neuropathologists specializing in Nerve Fiber Density testing at Therapath. Dr. Shao holds an MD degree and completed residency training in Neuropathology & Anatomic Pathology from NYU Medical Center. He also holds a PhD degree from Emory University. Dr. Shao is certificated in Anatomical Pathology and Neuropathology by the American Board of Pathology, and is certified and licensed to practice medicine by the New York State Departments of Health and Education. He is currently appointed to his role at Therapath, as well as Clinical Associate Professor of Pathology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.
Grace Lee, Ph.D., Director, Molecular Biology Laboratory
Dr. Lee received a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and post-doctoral training in molecular biology through a Howard Hughes Fellowship at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where she also subsequently had an appointment as Assistant Professor of Neuroimmunology in the Dept. of Neurology. She has worked extensively with gene expression and experimental systems of peripheral neuropathy disorders. She currently holds a Neurology & Neuroscience faculty position at Cornell Weill Medical College and a NY State Health Dept. Certificate of Qualification in Diagnostic Immunology.
Sam T. Tam, M.S., Vice President of Laboratory Operations
Sam received his BS from the State University of New York - Binghamton and his MS from New York University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, both in the department of Biology. He has thirty five years of experience in laboratory operations including: laboratory design, safety, operational efficiency, quality assurance and compliance. He has had responsibilities in coordinating activities in diagnostic service, teaching and research. He has participated in clinical and translational research and has had authorship in several peer reviewed papers as well as in abstracts and posters presented at national meetings. Sam holds a New York State license to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist and is also certified as a Histology Technician from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
