Laboratory Pathologist

Summary

The Laboratory Pathologist is responsible to perform proficiently under direction of the Laboratory Director and Assistant Director for the clinical laboratory tests specified and also to exercise independent judgment in the analysis of laboratory results. The Pathologist is responsible to adhere to the Company’s quality assurance standards, and to adhere to the accurate and timely reporting of results. The Pathologist can provide services to the laboratory on a full time or part-time basis. The Laboratory Pathologist will perform only those specialties or subspecialties in which they are qualified by education, training and experience. Pathologist with Board Certification will be given the highest priority.

Qualifications:

The Laboratory Pathologist must meet one of the following requirements:

  1. The Laboratory Pathologist must hold a valid MD license in the State of New York.
  2. The Laboratory Pathologist must hold a certificate of qualification in the category (ies) for which testing is being performed.
  3. The Laboratory Pathologist must be Board Certified in the specialized area that services are being performed.
  4. The Pathologist must have a minimum of 2 two years of experience in performing the category of testing services.
  5. The Pathologist must be competent and qualified to perform the assigned duties

In addition, the candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  1. Knowledge of computer software systems, including laboratory based platform system and reporting software
  2. Ability to perform work in an organized fashion, with a focus on completing assigned tasks in an orderly fashion and in compliance with stated process and procedure.
  3. Ability to work as part of a team/committee to complete assigned tasks when necessary.
  4. The ability to accept direction, work independently and complete work on time.

Training and Experience Requirements:


Potential employees must provide documentation that supports any statement of training and experience. Acceptable documentation includes:

  1. A Director’s Certificate of Qualification from the State of New York Department of Health indicates a completed credential file that has been reviewed and assessed by the State of New York who has issued the Certificate. This is the highest level of documentation that will be reviewed.
  2. C.V., Diplomas, resumes, transcripts, official letters from an institution of higher education indicating board eligibility or attesting to the highest level of learning achieved. A diploma is acceptable in lieu of a transcript only if it indicates the major course of study
  3. Letters from former employers verifying dates of employment and duties, indicating whether the experience was full or part time.
  4. Verbal references can be utilized, but then they must be contacted by the Company and the record of the conversation will be maintained in the personnel file.
  5. Research experience is only acceptable if it is obtained while performing tests on human specimens

Responsibilities:


The Laboratory Pathologist will perform the following responsibilities:

  1. Receive / review specimens that have completed testing from the laboratory testing staff.
  2. Review appropriate identification of specimens that are received.
  3. Perform preparation of reporting on results of tests performed on samples, in accordance with NYS regulation requirements.
  4. Perform proper disposal of any specimens that are not required to be stored, in a manner designed to minimize the likelihood of causing infection to any member of he public or lab staff.
  5. Perform proper operations of lab analysis equipment required (microscope, software system, etc.) and perform the analysis and reporting that is qualified to be completed.
  6. Perform filing procedures for documents and slides used by the technicians and returned items to the storage space in proper order.
  7. Participate in validation testing support to ensure that laboratory’s performance and the pathologist performance is evaluated to identify any issues that require intervention, additional training or corrective action.
  8. Ensure that all necessary actions are taken so that patient test results are reported only when the system is functioning properly.
  9. Confirm that all test reports include pertinent information required for appropriate and accurate interpretation.
  10. Participate in the Laboratory Quality Assurance Program.
  11. The Pathologist must be accessible to the Director or the Assistant Director to provide in-person, telephonic or electronic consultation on an as needed basis, with the administration, the referring physician and or the staff.
  12. Perform written and oral communication to employees, clients and vendors alike that are accurate, timely, understandable, legible, and traceable.
  13. Complete initial and then annual safety training including, OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Plans, Universal Precautions Policy, General Lab and Office Safety Plan, and Hazardous Chemical/Material training.
